Arctic cod is an ice fish from the cod family.

When traveling to Siberia on trophy fishing trips on the Putorana Plateau, you can catch cod, a relative of the cod family. Previously, we've covered burbot and pollock, and today we'll focus on another member of the cod family, the polar cod.

Although the fish is of no particular value, it is of interest to scientists. They are captivated by how the specimen has managed to survive the frigid waters of the Arctic Ocean and thrive in such harsh conditions.

What does the individual look like and its characteristics?

The main characteristic of the Arctic cod is precisely what was described above. The fish easily tolerates extreme temperature fluctuations and is found and reproduces in the waters of the Arctic Ocean. It is also known as the ice cod.

Appearance:

· The large head, which occupies one third of the entire body, is equipped with round, bulging eyes.

The codfish's weight and size aren't particularly impressive. It grows up to 30 cm and weighs a maximum of 450 grams.

· Like other cod fish, the polar cod has barbels located near the protruding lower jaw.

· The scales covering the individual are small,

· The back is brown and the belly is light with a silver sheen.

Some external features are similar to those of the blue whiting, but they are barely noticeable. Arctic cod are found almost everywhere in the Arctic Ocean. Zero temperatures, considered particularly critical for all fish species, are no problem for them.

Rab fish have a unique two-component protein that works like antifreeze in a car. It helps them stay warm in the ice, providing their tissues and body with everything they need to cope with low temperatures.

Ice and permafrost do not frighten this individual.

Where do cod live?

Arctic cod can be caught in the bays of the mighty Yenisei River. It is found in the Kara, Barents, and White seas. It also inhabits the waters of the Arctic Ocean, Russia's Arkhangelsk Archipelago, and America. Arctic cod are not considered a commercial species and are not caught by Siberians. However, they often end up in fishermen's seines and nets, thereby adding to the catch but threatening their own extinction. Arctic cod easily escape predatory fish, but are preyed upon by other Arctic inhabitants. These include loons, peregrine falcons, narwhals, seals, and even wolves, Arctic foxes, bears, and foxes.

Conclusion

Although polar cod have no commercial value, you'll agree that these fish are unique. The cod family, too, often surprises many with its peculiarities. The burbot alone is worth a look. It lives in freshwater, where all its relatives can't stand it. Polar cod survives in the ice and also has its own unique characteristics.

Visiting the Putorana Plateau is especially popular at any time of year. Especially when you come to hunt, fish, and reel in noble predatory fish like taimen from the cold Siberian waters. And afterward, you reminisce about that amazing fishing trip, looking at photos and videos of your trophies.
