What kind of fish is the Antarctic toothfish?

When considering the characteristics of various fish species, it's worth noting some individuals that are impossible to catch in many bodies of water. One such fish is the Antarctic toothfish, found in the Southern Ocean near Antarctica. It's worth noting that catching this fish there isn't easy, as it lives at enormous depths, ranging from one and a half to two kilometers, to almost two and a half kilometers.

What does this fish look like?

This predatory fish has a number of features, namely:

  • The mouth of a large specimen contains many sharp, large and small fangs. These are where the fish gets its name.
  • The predator's body is elongated, covered with small scales.
  • The head and mouth are quite large.
  • Both dorsal and anal fins are long.
  • The fish can be brown or black in color, while juveniles are lighter, with grayish-yellow tones. Small fish of this species are distinguished from larger ones by transverse stripes located on their sides.
  • Adults grow to a size of just under 2 meters, and their weight is 70-135 kg.

The only thing Antarctic toothfish don't have is probably barbels. The enemies of these bottom-dwelling predatory fish include seals, killer whales, and even penguins.

How do you catch a large predator in the ocean?

Various fishing gear is used to catch toothfish in the Southern Ocean. Bottom lines are used to catch trophy specimens. Of course, these are not the same as those typically used on trophy fishing trips on the Putorana Plateau. These are specially designed bottom trawls and longlines.

It's also worth noting that toothfish can be caught through ice fishing. This is done using a set line, a longline used for fishing on the bottom of deep water, equipped with a hook.

What does Antarctic toothfish taste like?

This predatory fish is considered delicious and nutritious due to its taste. It contains numerous beneficial vitamins, fats, and amino acids that have a beneficial effect on the human body. Therefore, toothfish meat is always in high demand in Antarctica.

It's used to prepare a variety of delicacies and, like many other Siberian fish species ( lenok, grayling, whitefish ), is eaten fresh or smoked. We've previously described how to prepare smoked fish while rafting in the protected Turukhansk region.

Conclusion

We described one of the most fascinating ocean fishes, which can only be caught near Antarctica. We also discussed methods for catching this deep-sea predator, the Antarctic toothfish, and provided a brief description.

Trophy fishing offers many advantages and variations. Therefore, those who want to learn more about it, discover recipes for delicious Siberian delicacies, and learn how to catch huge predators should consider visiting the unique routes of the Putorana Plateau.
