Rules for choosing hooks for spinning rods

The number of trophy predators caught with a spinning rod, or any other fishing rod, depends on the right equipment. This applies to all components: line, weights, floats, reels, and sharp, reliable hooks. An angler's arsenal when rafting on the rivers and lakes of the Putorana Plateau is quite extensive.
But the primary gear for catching noble fish is considered to be spinning rods or fly fishing rods. Fly fishing uses flies as lures. With one hook. Spinning rods have many more, and they can have several hooks.

Types of baits and hooks

Various spinners, silicone baits, mandulas, and wobblers, sometimes with multiple double or treble hooks, are used. A single hook is rarely used. Therefore, choosing tackle and lures for trophy fishing requires more careful consideration.

Hooks for wobblers

Often, when purchasing lures, the hooks are clearly inadequate or not quite right for catching large trophies. Moreover, they are not always the right size or of impeccable quality. So, anglers are forced to rig the lures themselves. The criteria for rigging wobblers are as follows:

  • The sizes of doubles and trebles must be suitable for the fish being hunted.
  • The main thing is that the hook does not interfere with the action of the bait, but rather adds additional vibrations, rotations, etc.
  • The wobbler must be able to cope with water obstacles without getting caught on everything.

Fishing with single hooks reduces the risk of harm to fish. For example, this applies to species like taimen, which must be released after capture to prevent extinction of the species.

Spoon bait

These lures are also equipped with various hooks: single, double, or treble. This depends on the fish the angler intends to catch. Some of them may be weedless.
Pilkers They have small hooks, making them suitable for catching small predators such as perch and pike perch. If a large pike bites, the hook may bend and not withstand the load. Therefore, the choice of hook should be based on the presence of predators in the water.
When selecting double hooks and treble hooks for spoons, ensure the hook length is approximately equal to the width of the lure's body. They are often equipped with two hooks to accommodate predators of varying sizes and lengths.

Spinner

For such lures, hooks of appropriate sizes are used. The hooks on them should also be approximately equal in width to the blades of the lure, so as not to interfere with free rotation.

Mandula

These lures are initially equipped with two hooks: treble hooks, double hooks, or a combination of single hooks. This allows for catching more trophy predators of various sizes. Most often, the large treble hook is located closer to the sinker, and the single hook or small double hook is located below.

Silicone bait

Silicone baits are equipped with various types of hooks. These can include jig heads, offset hooks, double hooks, and treble hooks. The right equipment should be selected based on the type of silicone bait:

  • Large hooks can interfere with the action of the bait, so the hook must be of the appropriate size.
  • Small products will not hook the predator effectively.

Regardless of the lure used on a spinning rod, remember that the hooks must always be sharp and secure. Rods rigged with double or treble hooks require a sharper hookset and greater effort from the angler. After all, the hook must be firmly attached to the fish's mouth, piercing the mouth.
