The bipunctatus (Alburnoides bipunctatus) species description and range. The bipunctatus is one of the characteristic small fishes of freshwater rivers in Europe and western Russia. Despite its small size, this member of the carp family plays an important role in the ecosystems of fast-flowing rivers: it acts as an indicator of clear water, serves as a food source for predators, and has many local forms. Anglers often dismiss it as a mere "small fish," but upon closer inspection, the species proves far more intriguing—it has a unique body structure, striking spawning patterns, and is highly adapted to life in currents.

2. Appearance and morphological features
The bystryanka is a small fish with a tall, laterally flattened body. It resembles the bleak in appearance, but has a more compact body and a distinctive pattern along its lateral line.
Main features:
- length 6–12 cm, maximum about 14 cm;
- weight 10–20 g;
- the body is tall, compact;
- eyes are large;
- The mouth is small, slightly upward-facing.
Coloring:
- back dark green or olive;
- sides are silvery with a metallic sheen;
- along the lateral line there is a double dotted line of dark dots - the main distinguishing feature;
- The fins are greyish, and some males develop reddish tints during spawning.
Distinctive features:
- characteristic double dotted line along the entire body;
- the body is higher and denser than that of the bleak;
- the scales are larger;
- During the spawning season, the bases of the males' fins turn red.

3. Distribution area
Bystryanka is found in Europe and western Russia.
Europe:
Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia, Poland, Switzerland, France, Hungary, Romania.
Russia:
The basins of the Volga, Don, Dnieper, Dniester, the Azov rivers, the upper reaches of the Kuban, the southwest of the Urals.
Absent:
in the northern regions (above Arkhangelsk), in deep lakes and stagnant bodies of water without current.
Typical biotope:
Rivers and medium-sized streams with clear water, moderate or rapid currents, and pebble or rocky bottoms. This species is strictly rheophilic, preferring oxygenated water.
4. Ecology and lifestyle
The trout is a schooling fish, typically found in groups of several dozen to hundreds. It prefers to dwell in the middle and upper water levels, avoiding pits and stagnant areas.
Nutrition:
- in spring - insect larvae and bottom crustaceans;
- in summer - zooplankton, midges, mayflies;
- in autumn - larvae, small invertebrates, algae threads;
- In winter, activity is minimal and nutrition is poor.
It especially readily consumes chironomid larvae (bloodworms), which is why it reflects the state of the reservoir well.
5. Reproduction
Spawning period: May – June.
Water temperature: 14–18 °C.
Spawning type: portioned.
The female lays her eggs on rocky riffles, pebbles, and areas with fast currents. The eggs are small, but numerous—they can weigh up to a quarter of the female's body weight. Development is rapid, with the young hatching in 4–6 days.
During spawning, the bases of the males' fins noticeably turn red and the metallic sheen of their sides intensifies.
6. Subspecies and local forms
The main recognized forms are:
- Alburnoides bipunctatus is the typical European form.
- Alburnoides bipunctatus rossicus is a Russian bipunctatus, common in the Volga and Don basins.
- Several Balkan and Caucasian forms, some researchers distinguish them as separate species.
7. Differences between the minnow and the bleak
| Sign | Bystryanka | Bleak |
|---|---|---|
| Body height | Tall, dense | Flatter |
| Sideline | Double dotted line | Straight line |
| Body structure | Stocky | Graceful, elongated |
| Wednesday | Fast current | Often standing water |
| Color of fins | Gray, sometimes yellowish | Transparent |
| Behavior | Holds on to the shallows | Walks near the surface |
8. Importance for fishermen
The bystryanka has no commercial value, but is actively used as live bait for predatory fish: perch, pike, chub, asp, ide.
Advantages as live bait:
- high mobility;
- strong scales;
- remains active in the current for a long time;
- Transfers bait to the hook well.
9. Results
The scaly-sided trout is a small, yet ecologically important and highly specialized species closely associated with clean, fast-flowing rivers. It serves as an indicator of the water quality, acts as food for predators, and is attractive to anglers as an effective live bait. The species is easily recognized by the characteristic double dotted line along its body and its attachment to the current.
