Squid: a powerful saltwater bait for catching large freshwater predators. Squid is one of the most effective and popular saltwater baits, successfully used for catching large freshwater predators in rivers, reservoirs, and lakes. This bait is particularly prized for its dense, elastic texture, strong marine aroma, and ability to retain its attractiveness for a long time in the water. Squid is ideal for catching trophy pike, catfish, pike-perch, burbot, taimen, and large perch, especially in the fall and winter, when predators become passive and prefer fatty, flavorful prey. Thanks to its strength, squid can withstand powerful bites and prolonged reeling, which is especially important when targeting wary and strong fish. In unique protected areas such as the Putorana Plateau, home to thousands of crystal-clear lakes and majestic waterfalls and home to trophy taimen, squid could be one of the best baits for catching this powerful predator, although catch-and-release fishing still prevails to preserve the unique ecosystem.
Benefits of squid as bait
Squid has a number of outstanding qualities that make it a leader among sea baits:
- A strong and persistent marine aroma - a predator can smell it from a great distance even in cold water.
- Dense and elastic structure - does not fly off the hook during casting and powerful jerks.
- Durability– can work on the hook for 2-6 hours, especially in cold water.
- Versatility– suitable for all types of bottom, tip-up and circle fishing.
- It cuts off small fish perfectly; large pieces attract only medium and trophy fish.
- Availability all year round– frozen squid is sold in any supermarket.
- High fat content - contains a lot of protein and fat, which is especially attractive to catfish and burbot.
Disadvantages and features of application
- Requires proper preparation - raw or improperly cut squid does not work well.
- The smell can be off-putting - in warm water or when there is an excess, it can sometimes alarm wary fish.
- Difficulty of storage: defrosted food spoils quickly (no more than 12–24 hours).
- The price is more expensive than worms or peas, although it is still available.
Types of squid for fishing
- Fresh or chilled is the best option, but is rare.
- Frozen (tubes, rings, whole carcasses) is the most popular and affordable.
- Squid fillet is easy to cut, but less flavorful.
- Small squids (5–15 cm)– whole on the hook.
- Large carcasses (20–40+ cm) are cut into strips or squares.
How to properly prepare squid
1. Defrosting
- Slow - in the refrigerator (+2…+4 °C) 6–12 hours.
- Do not defrost in a microwave or hot water - it will lose its aroma and structure.
2. Slicing
- Strips - 1-2 cm wide, 5-15 cm long (for pike, pike-perch).
- Squares - 2x2 cm or 3x3 cm (for catfish, burbot).
- Tubes - cut lengthwise, turn inside out and cut into rings.
- Whole small squid - put them on the hook whole, piercing the head and mantle.
3. Enhance the aroma (optional)
- Soak for 1-2 hours in a weak salt solution with garlic.
- Add dill, anise, and garlic to the cooking water (if boiling).
- Lightly fry in a dry frying pan - enhances the aroma (for summer).
How to properly bait squid
- Hook - No. 1/0–6/0 (long shank, powerful).
- For pike - 2-3 stripes along the body, sting outward.
- For catfish - a large piece or a whole tube, pierce several times.
- For pike perch - thin strips (1 cm × 8–12 cm), thread along.
- For burbot - thick pieces, preferably with skin.
- The sting can be hidden or left open, depending on the fish's caution.
Efficiency by predator species and seasons
- Pike - autumn-winter, especially large specimens.
- Pike perch - late autumn, winter, early spring.
- Catfish - summer-autumn, night, large pieces.
- Burbot - winter, night, thick stripes.
- Taimen - summer-autumn, large strips 15-25 cm - one of the best options.
Helpful tips
- Defrost in portions - do not defrost the entire package at once.
- Store in an airtight container with salt - extends shelf life to 2-3 days.
- In the current, use a sliding sinker.
- In warm water - change every 30-60 minutes.
- For winter fishing, store in the snow or in a hole.
- For trophy fishing, take pieces with skin and tentacles - they work better.
Squid isn't just a simple sea bait, but a true "heavy artillery" for catching trophy predators in the cold season. Its durability, aroma, and naturalness make it an indispensable tool in any serious angler's arsenal. Wishing you successful bites and trophy specimens!
