The snakehead is an interesting reptile fish.

A fish-like creature with a fish-like body and a snake-like head, appropriately named, it is considered one of the most beautiful and powerful fishes. There are several species of snakehead, some of which inhabit Russian waters.

This predator is not found in the Putorana Plateau taiga reserve, but this reptile-like fish is of particular interest to fishermen across the country. Specimens that don't grow to large sizes can be found in aquariums, but this doesn't mean all members of this family are small.

Where is the predator found?

The predator comes in several varieties. Snakeheads are classified into nearly 30 species, found in Russia and the countries of Central and South Asia.

Some are small and miniature in size, while others are gigantic. Snake-headed fish can reach almost 2 meters.

· The Amur representative of a large family lives in Russia and is distinguished by its particular vitality, thanks to its unique respiratory system.

In the country, the habitat of snakeheads is the Amur River and Lake Khanka.

What does the individual look like and what features does it have?

In appearance, the fish is very similar to a snake:

· Its head is flattened, on which are located reptilian-looking eyes.

· The predator has a snout extended forward, a large mouth and powerful jaws.

· The body is elongated.

· The scales are small, plate-shaped, and colored in greenish-brown tones.

· There are speckled spots on the sides and back of the individual.

· Large species can weigh around 1 kilogram and reach up to 180 cm in length.

The snakehead is unique in that it can move not only underwater but also on land. It can survive without air for several days.

There have been cases of snakefish crawling across land for quite long distances, tens of kilometers, without oxygen or food. In this way, the predator trades one shallow body of water for another, more saturated one.

Like crucian carp and carp, snakeheads can avoid death in shallow rivers by burrowing into deep mud. After filling the necessary air sacs near their gills, the predator burrows and waits out the dry spell.

How to catch a snakefish

Warmth-loving specimens are found in lakes or rivers with dense vegetation. It's best to look for the predator in snags, and you can tell that this species is present in a body of water by the popping sound and large number of bubbles.

To catch substantial trophies, this predatory species should be hunted during the warmer months, from spring to fall. Fishermen use bread, corn, or live bait as bait. Snakeheads enjoy frogs, live bait, and fish meat.

When fishing, don't rush your hookset. The fish will initially toss or lash the bait with its tail, and only then will it eagerly attack. Experienced anglers recommend using vibrotails, twisters, or spoons. All of these lures are capable of producing a substantial catch.

For fishing, it's best to use a spinning rod equipped with a reel (multiplier or spinning). The rod's casting weight should be no less than 100 grams, and its length can be up to 3 meters. A leader is not required, and the line must be capable of withstanding significant loads and not break under loads of less than 40 kilograms.
