Texas rig

Texas-style fishing rod and spinning equipment, like the Carolina style and many others, came to Russia from abroad. This equipment is used for catching various predatory species, but is most often used for landing large bass and pike.

While on a trophy fishing tour along the Yenisei River, visitors to the Putorana Plateau can try their hand at rigging and hunting for these toothy specimens. While the Texas rig may have some variations, there's a basic method, which will be discussed in this article.

The original, basic version of the Texas rig

Texas rigs are similar to Carolina rigs in many ways; they are considered related rigs. Similar components are used for assembly, including offset hooks, beads, and swivels, with bullets serving as weights. Twisters, vibrotails, and baits can be used. etc.

The Texas rig differs from the Carolina rig in that the sinker is positioned a short distance from the hooked bait. The main difference from a jig (like the Carolina rig) is that the sinker slides along the leader. This increases the rig's sensitivity to bites. Even if the bait is biting, it remains on the bottom of the water.

The advantage of a bullet-shaped sinker is that the rod can pass through snags and algae without snagging. Many anglers rig their spinning rods this way during trophy fishing trips in the Putorana Peninsula, as the taiga's waters are often littered with snags, rocks, and algae.

This is what a Texas rig looks like.

Texas Bass Rig

The setup for catching different predators may vary. When targeting striped predators, it will be as follows:

  • In snags and other clogged waters, a short fluorocarbon leader, 25 to 40 cm long, is required. This prevents snags and shells from breaking and prevents the sharp teeth of predatory fish from tearing the line.
  • Experienced anglers recommend using a knot called the Trailin when tying tackle (hook and sinker). It surpasses many other knots in reliability and strength.
  • Like the Carolina rig, a bead with a large hole is used as a stopper. This helps hide the knot inside. A piece of silicone can also be used as a brake for the sliding weight.
  • The other end is fitted with a swivel and tied with a trailing or clinch knot. For those unfamiliar with how to tie such knots, a standard figure-eight can be used.

Texas rig for pike

To catch the Yenisei River "river alligator," you'll need to add a metal line to your rig. Because pikes, with their sharp teeth, can easily cut through even fluorocarbon line less than 0.4 mm thick. Sometimes even thick line can't withstand the strain and snaps in the predator's jaws.

Texas allows for the catching of large predators.

Conclusion

These are the basic options of the Texas rig, allowing you to catch hefty trophies in the waters of the reserve. On other rivers and lakes, the Texas rig helps you catch walleye, whose teeth are among the sharpest and most dangerous, even for thick fishing lines.
